Postal code or town:

Postal codes are 5-digit numbers e.g. 59200 used to classify French towns based on post offices. Contrary to what most people think, a given postal code does not necessarily refer to a town's departement. What more, the same postal code can refer to several towns. And similarly, one town can have multiple postal codes. As said above, it all depends on mail distribution offices. The same office can be in charge of delivering mail in several towns, even in towns located in neighboring departements provided those towns are close enough to the distribution office. The list of towns the postal code of which does not start with the departement number they are located in can be found here.
